Market Report for March / April

March 20, 2013 at 2:31 AM

The weather was starting to warm up then along come another snap of cold weather ...Which has set a lot of the growers back as they can’t cover all the little heads of the plants that have started to sprout above ground, let’s hope this is just a blip and they will all recover

Potatoes

Still a problem and less and less stock available hence why the price is high The nettles have started to arrive with a good sting, so we are expecting the first crop of Jersey Royal Mids shortly, Expect the prices to start high then drop as the season progresses.

Asparagus

The cold weather has set back the English asparagus, but the French crop is still coming through. Until now all our white asparagus has been shipped across the channel  but, for the first time White asparagus is being grown in the UK and the first crop will be arriving soon will update you when it is available.

Wild Garlic

This has started and should carry through until end of May The nettles have started to arrive with a good sting, so we are expecting the first Crops shortly, Expect the prices to start high then drop as the season progresses

Purple sprouting broccoli - has had a horrid time this winter please try and avoid

Aubergines and Peppers

The bad weather in Spain has cause the price to rise and is expected to stay like this for a while

Imported

Cauliflower and Leeks are now imported as English has finished which has given us an increase on price.

Fruit

On the fruit side Raspberries, Strawberries are all good value at the moment Strawberries are large firm but very nice on the palate. Melons are also very good both price and quality, Galia melons in particular. Red and Yellow Plums are tasting great.
